Portion Distortion
Today, we had a speaker from Children's Mercy talking about healthy eating habits. She mentioned a website that would calculate how many calories a person should eat based on their height, weight and amount of exercise. This website is MyPyramind.

Sequel
Many of you were asking about a movie or sequel to The Man Who Loved Clowns. Sadly, there isn't a movie that I know of, but there is a sequel. Turtle on a Fence Post is about Delrita's life after the loss of Punky and her parents. Will she be able to get along with Aunt Queenie and Uncle Bert without Punky there to help her? Read the sequel to find out.
Man Who Loved Clowns
We have finally finished, The Man Who Loved Clowns. I really enjoyed reading it to the students because we had great discussion with it. I feel as if I pick something up from it everytime I read it. I hope they learned many lessons from the book such as...
1. A person may have special needs but they also can be independant and teach typical people life lessons.
2. We shouldn't judge someone because we may not fully understand them.
3. Life is much better with the love of family and friends.
Your child can elaborate on these lessons.

2. Write a paragraph about which book you liked best and why. Also, give it a 1-10 rating. 1 being the worst book you have ever read and 10 being the best book ever.

Bake Sale
I am so proud of all of the fifth graders coming together to help a fellow student. They came up with the idea of a cookie fundraiser to raise money for their classmate who lost almost all of his belongings in a fire. The class raised $426, which was used to buy him and XBox and Walmart gift cards. We have such a giving class, school and community.

Star Stories
Each week, a student in our classroom is assigned to be the Reporter. His or her job is to take notes throughout the week of exciting happenings and then write a short article about what took place. Students can use a computer at home or one of the classroom's computers. Students will type their articles and turn them in to Mrs. Boucher. Students can e-mail them, or save them to their computer. This is a great way for students to get an opportunity to write using technology, and publish their work on the internet.
