Bud, Not Buddy

You are getting ready to read the book, "Bud, Not Buddy" written by Christopher Paul Curtis. This book was set in 1936. Research the time period to help you understand the time Bud was living in. Post your paragraph below.

  1. Our Book Bud, Not Buddy takes place in the 1930-1940. Some things that happened are Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected. Then he was reelected also.
    Some other things that happened are Pluto was discovered. The star spangle banner became our national anthem too. Also the first helicopter was invented.

    It was a leap year on a Wednesday. The Spanish civil war saw a social revolution. November 3 there was a president election. Verd Stretz tells what happened of a murder on the 20th of March. There was the great depression. The first jet was invented. October 29th, the wall crashed. January 20 to December 11, Duke Windsor’s reign was only 326 days long. November 18, Mrs. Humphrey’s body was returned to Marysville.

  3. 1936 Events
    Our book, Bud, Not Buddy, takes place in 1936. One thing that happened during that time was the Hoover Dam was finished. Another thing was World War II was going on. John McCain was born. Killer tornados strike Tupelo, Mississippi and Gainesville, Georgia. 1936 started on a Wednesday and ended on a Thursday. It was a leap year. The cost of gas was 10 cents and a loaf of bread was 8 cents. Former President Roosevelt was re-elected. The Dust Bowl was still going on.

    In our book Bud, Not Buddy it takes place in 1930’s. One event that happened during the 1930’s was the Dust Bowl in 1932. Another thing that happened is the Great Depression that was1910-1960. Also John McCain was bornin1936. World War II was from 1939-1945 it was also in the 1930’s.

  5. 1900s
    One thing that happened in the 1900s was that president Roosevelt was reelected as president. Another thing that happened was that the zipper was invented. The cost of clothes in the 1900s was very cheap compared to what the cost is now. Men’s shirts where only $2, women’s silk hose was only 49 cents!!! But that was in the 1900s; now the cost of men’s shirts is about $5-$15 depending on what type of shirt it is they can cost a lot more. Women’s silk hose are about maybe $3. The great depression was also a big event in the 1900s. The great depression was when the economy went down a lot to where people could lose their houses. And the dust bowl was also a little part of the great depression. In the dust bowl many people died and cattle were also killed because of all the dust getting in their lungs.

  6. In 1936-1940 this happened. Alexis Carrel and Charles Lindbergh developed the 1st artificial heart. Boulder Dam was completed. The first helicopter was made. The first electric guitar was played. Japan invades China. Hurricane in category 3 hits Long Island. Germany invades Poland. World War 2 began. Batman came out. The first McDonald’s hamburger stand opens in Pasadena, Calif.

  7. There was a depression going on. It ended when the US entered the World War 2. In 1931 the Empire State building got finished. Amilia Earhart started her solo flight around the Atlantic Ocean,in 1932.In 1934 the cheeseberger was created,and there was a dustbowl, it lasted untill 1936. In 1936 the Spanish Civil war began.
    In 1937 Amilia Earhart vanished.

  8. My book takes place in the 1936. In 1936 semi-automatic rifles were adopted by the U.S. army. The average cost of a new house was $3,925.00, a gallon of gas was 10cents; a house rent was $24.00 per month, and a loaf of bread was 8cents. A ladies swimming costume was $6.95, and a LB of hamburger meat was 12cents. Hoover Dam finished and begins creating hydroelectric power.

  9. The book Bud, Not Buddy takes place in the 1930’s. Some things going on around that time were… The Wizard of Oz came out, Hoover Dam was completed, World War II raged on, and the Great Depression was going on. Some more things were the Dust Bowl was coming to a stop, Superman comics became a hit. Sticky tape, the Jet Engines, helicopters, radio telescopes and radars for airplanes were all invented in the 1930’s. Money related things in the 1930’s were $100 in the 1930’s is worth $1204.42 today. In 1930 the average cost of a house was $7,145.00 and by 1939 a house cost $3,800 more. The gas back then only cost 10 cents! The average car cost $640.00 and by 1939 was $700.00 more.
